Strength Training for Runners
Blog
Having run more than 20 marathons and too many 5K’s, 10K’s, and half marathons to even count, I feel my potential for injury has been drastically reduced because of my adherence to a well balanced and supervised weight training program at Fitness21. Most runners deal with injuries from time to time; mine are mainly due to determination, denial, and a high pain tolerance. These are fairly consistent factors among competitive distant runners. I consider myself an average runner who works hard to train at or above my natural ability. My intensity and hard work has paid off with lots of awards and trophies, some cash awards, respect from my peers in the running community, and increased passion for the sport.

What I have learned over the years from the personal training team at Fitness21 is that strength training for runners is more about working on balanced strength in the major muscle groups in addition to flexibility and balance – like performing reps on one leg while standing on a bosu ball balance. I have received sports specific training at its best here at this progressive club as opposed to the old school, cookie-cutter, and aesthetic training for bodybuilders offered at other facilities.

My best advice to a runner, who is new to weight training, or an athlete intent on putting more emphasis on becoming a better runner, is to consider working with a personal trainer. Working with a personal trainer even for just a few sessions can make a huge difference because a trainer puts the focus on good form and a sound, well thought out program. I believe the Fitness21 trainers do their homework. They research specific types of training using access to cutting edge information; they also belong to networks of health and fitness professionals, and truly care about their client’s goals and progress.
Hoping to run at least 20 more marathons, I have actually learned to run smarter and will continue to rely on the expertise of the training team and enjoy the friendly, unpretentious vibes from Fitness21.
