1. Make sure your child is wearing comfortable clothing and practical shoes. Avoid Costumes that are too long to prevent any tripping or falling.
2. If the costume comes with a mask, consider using face paint instead. Unobstructed vision and comfort will insure a safer and more enjoyable experience for your child.
3. Make sure your child is wearing something well lit as opposed to carrying a flashlight. Try glow necklaces, bracelets, or one of those small, clip-on flashing lights that runners wear; they can be turned on and off and last for 100’s of hours.
4. Always accompany young children while they trick or treating. Never let them go on their own.
5. Have your Tweens or young Teens trick or treat in groups.
6. Always trick or treat in neighborhoods that are familiar to you. If your local area is not appropriate, join with friends so the children can trick or treat with them in their neighborhood. Or trick or treat at a local mall or town center.
7. Trick or treat in neighborhoods that are well lit. Use sidewalks, driveways and walkways. Avoid crossing through yards to get to the next house to prevent injuries from sprinkler heads, decorations, fire ants, holes, mud, low hanging branches, thorns and other dangerous landscaping.
8. Remind your child to watch out for cars and to follow all traffic rules.
9. Have your child carry a trick or treat bag with handles or shoulder strap that is easy to carry. Avoid bags with sharp edges.
10. Remind your child not to eat ANY candy until you have safely inspected it.
From our family to yours, have a safe and happy Halloween!
